Dear Parents and Guardians;

Student-led Parent Conferences –This week we completed our first annual student-led parent conferences.  The reviews have been excellent.  We are very proud of our students who worked hard to take the lead in these conferences.  Together, parents and students developed a plan for academic success.  If you were not able to attend your student’s conference, it is not too late.  Contact your student’s home room teacher to arrange a time and day.  These conferences are very important for the success of your student.  Don’t ignore this opportunity.

Aca Deca – Our students will be competing in the regional Academic Decathlon this coming weekend on Saturday, February 4. The Super Quiz begins at 3:45 – at Inderkum High School in Natomas.  Come and cheer our team on.  Students on the Aca Deca team are as follows:

Steven A., Mason C., Vincenzo V., Kaleb D., Zachary B., Samuel M., Paul J., Amanda S., Desirae W., Daniel P., Spencer M., Kyle M., Breannan S., Ashley S., Dylon E.

Robotics – Some of our students will be competing in the First Tech Challenge Robotics competition on Saturday as well.  The competition will take place at Valley Christian High School in San Jose.  For more details, please contact our school office.

CAHSEE Tutoring – The California Exit Exam for 10th graders is approaching soon.  In preparation for this important test, we are offering tutoring every Tuesday and Thursday after school.  All 10th graders are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. Our teachers are working hard to make sure that our students pass this important test on their first time.   There is only one more week of tutoring left.

Dress Code – As the cold weather finally approaches, it is time to remind students of the dress code.  Only plain colored shirts are allowed (no plaids, stripes, etc).  Shirts must have a collar and be tucked in at all times.  Thank you, parents, for helping us with this.

Speaker of the month – This week we were happy to welcome Eric Lieuwen – firefighter/EMT aircraft rescue and firefighting and John Conneally – battalion chief who talked to our students at the Aerospace Museum on Wednesday.  This interactive presentation allowed some lucky students to try on the firefighter’s protective gear.  Students were encouraged to ask questions and talk individually with our guests.  We thank the Aerospace Museum for allowing us the use of their facility for this fantastic presentation.

Fund Raiser – Please continue to save your used ink cartridges and old cell phones and bring them in to the school office.   We are also collecting “box tops for education”. You may also bring these items to the school office.

After School pick-up – Reminder - high school is officially dismissed at 3:22 Monday – Thursday and 1:00 on Fridays.  If your student is not involved in the After School Program or is not being tutored by a teacher, he/she must leave campus. We do not have adequate supervision for students who are not involved in a program.  Your child’s safety is most important.  Please help us by seeing that your child is picked up after school on time.

Parent’s Club – This coming Thursday we will hold our monthly Parents of CAA meeting.  All parents are encouraged to attend.  The meeting begins promptly at 6:00 in the school cafeteria.  The teachers from the history department will be doing a presentation.   There will also be information about the upcoming CAHSEE test and our first annual Space Science in the classroom.  The home room with the most parents attending will receive a prize.

Dear Parents and Guardians;

Happy New Year to everyone!  The staff at CAA hopes that you had a restful and productive winter holiday and are enjoying the beginning of a new year.  We are ready to start the second semester and have many great things in store for our students.  Robotics will be starting in preparation for the upcoming competitions.  We have added a driver education elective class for our 10th graders.  Our students needing credit recovery will be able to make up credits on line, and our yearbook is in production. A bit of sad news, however.  Due to low enrollment, we have had to consolidate some classes.  Mrs. FitzGibbon is no longer with us, but I am pleased to announce that she is now working at SAVA, one of our Gateway Community Charter schools.  Mr. Vasquez is now teaching 7th grade science and aerospace for all middle school students.  We welcome back Mrs. Schroeder, and she will be teaching 8th grade ELA along with her other courses.  Mr. Gregory is teaching all the PE classes for both high school and middle school.  After our first week of the semester, everything is working well and students seem to be pleased with the changes.  We thank our teachers for stepping up and doing what is best for our kids by offering the best education that we can give them.

2.0 club – All students were challenged to work hard this semester and achieve a 2.0 GPA or better.  I am happy to announce that 60% of our students achieved that goal.  We are working on 80% for the 3rd quarter.  Please help us by making sure that your child completes his homework, comes to school on time, and studies hard for tests.  Students will be rewarded for their efforts later this month.

Parent Club Meeting – Our first parent club meeting of the new year was held last Thursday. We had a great turn out and it is hoped that this will continue.  There is still a need for parent club officers.  If you are interested, please contact that school or respond to this newsletter for further information.  Report cards were passed out along with parent conference schedules.  If you were unable to attend this important meeting, your student’s report card is in the mail.  This year we are hosting student-led parent conferences on January 23-25.  These meetings are very important and we hope that all parents will be able to attend.  If the time that you have been assigned will not work for you, please contact your child’s home room teacher to reschedule.

Health screenings – On Monday, our 8th   and 10th grade students will participate in vision and hearing tests. These important tests will be held in the morning, so please see that your student is at school on time.

Letters of support – As we discussed at the parent meeting on Thursday, our school is scheduled for charter renewal.  Every five years charter schools must be renewed through their authorizing agency.  I am sure that you are aware of the media attention to this task.  Currently, California Aerospace Academy working collaboratively with Twin Rivers USD as the authorizing district is in the Charter Renewal process. The media release from the California Charter Schools Association is considered advisory information to the authorizing district. Twin Rivers USD and Gateway Community Charters will make informed decisions based on education code regarding charter renewal.  You can help us in this process.  There will be a Gateway Community Charters Board meeting on January 17 at 4:45.  Parents are welcome to attend this meeting and speak on behalf of the school.  If you are unable to attend, your letters of support are also welcome. If you choose to write a letter, please address it to:

                Gateway Community Charters Board of Directors

Letters can be sent or dropped off at our school office and we will make sure that they are delivered in time for the board meeting.  We thank you for supporting our school and helping us with the renewal process.

Fund Raisers – The parents of CAA are currently sponsoring two fund raisers.  We are collecting ink cartridges and old cell phones for recycle.  If you have any of these items, they can be dropped on in the collection bin in our office.  Also, if you work for a business that throws away their used ink cartridges, please tell them about recycling fund raiser.

The other fund raiser that is in progress is our morning coffee sale. Every Tuesday morning high school students are selling coffee and hot chocolate between 7 and 8 AM.  This fundraise supports the senior class in their efforts to raise enough money for senior activities.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

Dear Parents and Guardians;

Monday, January 16 is a school holiday. As we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,  we should try to discuss how race and cultural diversity matter in our own lives. We can do this by telling stories, asking questions, talking to our families about race and setting aside at least part of the day to understanding at least one thing about someone else from another culture or a different ethnicity than our own.The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.Martin Luther King, Jr.

Student-led Parent Conferences – You should have received your appointment for your conference enclosed in your student’s report card.  All report cards were mailed out last week.  If you have not received your copy, please contact the school office.  Parent conferences are very important.  If you cannot attend the conference at your appointed time, please contact your child’s home room teacher to arrange for another time.
